Microsoft Revises Discontinued Exams Policy

10/24/2001 -- Microsoft announced via its Web site recently that it has revised its policy on discontinuing exams. According to the announcement, from now on Microsoft will consider discontinuing an exam only after it's been available for two years, rather than "retiring" it. The discontinuation indicates that some exams, while no longer available, can still be counted toward newer certifications and tracks.

The new policy ties in with the company's recent decision not to retire certifications themselves -- instead, titles will be identified by track (MCSE NT 4.0, MCSE 2000, etc.).

With this latest change, some exams that were virtually useless as little as a week ago -- for example, the TCP/IP exam for MCSEs in 4.0 -- are now counting toward the most current versions of a certification (click here for example of new requirements).

10/24/01: TCO says: It is about time M$ came down to earth on the entire exams/certification issue. This is exactly what needed to be in place from the start. There controll/money issue stance was cutting there own throat with most of the IT community. Don't get me wrong, I fully support staying up to date on current technology. I am & I feel everyone should, if they don't want to be left behind. But M$'s tactics on the entire certification issue were a little hard to take. Regards
10/24/01: Sam says: Are NT4 exams goingto be available so we MCSE2000 can certify in NT4 or will &0-222 and 70-244 allow us to qualify for the NT4 cert?
10/25/01: Fred says: What a great decision, and I don't feel cheated at all because I did all the W2K tests in time. Thank you Microsoft, I now trust your company even more.
10/25/01: Prentice says: Sorry guys, too little too late. Because of all the issues with the NT exam, I decided to try Brainbench. Their quality, convenience, and cost have won me over. Their tests are better than M$'s, and my boss now thinks the same - that's all that matters to me!
10/25/01: SRS says: At first I was annoyed that M$ was retiring the NT4 track so quickly. Then pleasantly surprised they decided to keep the "MCSE on NT 4" designation. Now, I feel they've gone too far in the other direction. After studying for (and passing) the 70-240 and 70-244, I realize there is much more to know about the new OS than the new minimum requirements require to be an expert.
10/30/01: Joseph says: I was not surprised that Microsoft "gave in" because so many of us voiced our opinions. See everyone, Microsoft does listen. Let's keep it up. It's what our nation is about.
10/31/01: Becky says: Prentice -- My "shill" meter is going off. Your post is just a little too smooth and "markety." My sincerest apologies in advance if you're real, but if not, please be aware that we don't take kindly to fake posts around here. -- Becky Nagel, Web Editor, CertCities.com ([email protected])
1/2/02: Anonymous says: With the new policies put in place since Windows 2000 (according to http://www.microsoft.com/traincert/mcp/mcse/faq.asp), MCSEs who lost their certification because of 70-077 are permitted to regain their status as MCSEs on Windows NT 4.0, *but* MCSE+Internets decertified because of 70-077 can no longer be MCSE+Is (of which I am one). I believe that it is both unfair and discriminatory that MCSEs should be given the opportunity to continue to regain their certification as MCSEs on NT 4.0 while the MCSE+Internet holders (the previous 'premier' certification holders) are penalized and prevented from maintaining their status. 1) I think that MCSE+Is should be allowed to regain their status; 2) I worked hard and earned my MCSE+Internet and MCP+Internet designations, just as transcript viewers can see the exams that I have passed *although* they are retired, can't my transcript at least indicate that I once acheived these certifications?
