Cisco Updates CCNP with New Exams, Issues New Recert Policy

8/15/2006 -- Cisco Systems announced Tuesday it is updating the exams for its Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) certification and the recertification policy for all of its Professional-level titles.

Of the current four exams for Cisco's popular mid-level title, the 642-821 BCRAN and the 642-831 CIT will be replaced with new exams, and the other two -- the 642-811 BCMSN and 642-801 BSCI -- will be updated:

Old Exams New Exams
642-811 BCMSN - Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks 642-812 BCMSN - Campus Switch Networks Wireless LAN
642-801 BSCI - Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks 642-901 BSCI - Routing Protocols at Campus Edge
642-821 BCRAN - Building Cisco Remote Access Networks 642-825 ISCW - Implementing Secure Converged WANs
642-831 CIT - Cisco Internetwork Troubleshooting 642-845 ONT - Optimized Converged Cisco Networks

The new exams are available immediately worldwide at Cisco-authorized testing centers. The old exams will be retired Dec. 31, 2006.

The focus of the changes is on "applications deployed on the edge of the network, such as wireless, security and voice," Cisco said in a statement. A key part of the expanded coverage beyond core routing and switching is Cisco's Integrated Services Routers (ISRs), which deliver data, voice, video and wireless services.

"We did a pretty major overhaul of the curriculum to include advanced technologies (e.g, security, VoIP, wireless)," Ray Garra, a manager in the Learning and Development Group at Cisco, told TCPmag.com. "We also uplifted and upgraded the labs and exams to include relevant applications, tasks and skills necessary to implement the ISRs and how those have integrative services now."

Another goal of the update was to emphasize security skills, which are largely tested on the new ISCW exam. Topics include securing VPNs, hardening Cisco devices and defending the Cisco IOS from threats.

"You don't create a network without security being a top priority," Garra said. "If you're going to build a network, you have to secure it."

Components of the retiring BCRAN exam will now be part of the updated BCMSN and the new ONT exams, while the troubleshooting skills tested on the old CIT exam will be found throughout all the new exams.

As a result of the BSCI exam's upgrade, the Cisco Certified Internetwork Professional (CCIP) and Cisco Certified Design Professional (CCDP) certifications will also include the new BSCI exam as part of their required exams.

Cisco also announced Tuesday that cert holders can recertify their active Professional-level certifications -- CCNP, CCDP, CCIP, Cisco Certified Security Professional (CCSP) or Cisco Certified Voice Professional (CCVP) -- by passing any one of the Professional-level exams or a Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) exam before the expiration date of their certification(s).

Previously, candidates had to pass select exams, or a composite exam, within each certification track to recertify. In the case of the CCNP, active holders recertified by passing either the 642-891 Composite exam, or both the BSCI and BCMSN exams.

Certification holders can check their current status by using their Cisco ID to access the Certification Tracking System here. -Dan Hong

8/15/06: Brian from Reno, NV says: Wow. This is a great update to some very old material. ISDN? Forget it. Dial bacukps? Gone. The voice and wireless stuff is great also. My only questions are when will there be a study library for these new exams? Cisco press hasn't been updated yet. Any classes, etc.? How long does Cisco usually take to get this type of material out when they make a major revision? Thanks Cisco.
8/15/06: Tavarez from Atlanta says: I agree that this is a good move by Cisco. Some of the topics covered in their BCRAN exams is very very old technology. Most companies have already or plan to move to IP telephone and VoIP networks. Wireless networks are also becoming the standard deployment for a many companies to address the physical limitations of wired ethernet.
8/15/06: Vitali from Tbilisi says: Of course this is a right move by Cisco. I passed BSCI an BCMSN exams but not CIT and BCRAN yet. What should I do? Do I have to repass new BSCI and BCMSN?
8/15/06: rajeev from asia says: pls tell me also i hv finished composite 642-891 and now which exams i hv to pass to get my ccnp thnx in advance
8/16/06: arjscott from Japan says: You do not have to resit BSCI, BCMSN, or the composite exam if you have just taken them. You will still meet the CCNP requirements if you take the other updated exams within the 3 year duration required for CCNP.
8/16/06: tarun from india says: pls tell me also i hv finished composite 642-891 and now which exams i hv to pass to get my ccnp exam in new track
8/16/06: Ross from UK says: Good news. The CCNP was lagging new technologies significantly, this allows for a simpler recert whilst allowing you to broaden your skillbase at the same time.
8/16/06: doug from USA-VA says: Puts the pressure on to finish outgoing tests while study materials are still valid. I like that only 1 test is required to recert.
8/16/06: Dominic from California says: My advice to all the questions one may have, visit the Cisco's certification site and watch the three videos on the recent CCNP updates to the exam. There are also diagrams that show what exams can be combined and from what dates the exams expire. There is also a new "CCNP" Prep Center that is available now.
8/16/06: Basheer MK from India says: It’s really excited to know that CCNP is updated with latest technologies.Thnks CISCO
